Learn more about Thorncrest Village and the opportunities it has to offer homebuyers in our neighbourhood guide…

Toronto’s first modern suburb

Designed by a renowned urban planner in 1945, Thorncrest Village is considered to be one of Toronto’s first suburbs. The neighbourhood’s streets were laid out to optimize southern sun exposure, and trees were preserved whenever possible during community development. To maintain Thorncrest’s calm, natural aesthetic, bylaws were also put into place to prevent homeowners from building fences and unapproved home additions.

Over the years, Thorncrest Village has retained its traditional suburban character. The neighbourhood blends elements of the natural world and the city, while continuing to embody the ideals of community values and respect for privacy.

An idyllic setting

The large lots, tree-lined streets, and ranch-style bungalows that were so carefully planned decades ago still give Thorncrest Village a picturesque quality today. Distinctive features—such as preserved wooded areas and gently-winding streets—set the neighbourhood apart from many recently-built suburbs in Toronto. That said, the area has undergone some changes in recent decades. Most notably, larger modern houses have been popping up along neighbourhood streets, increasing architectural diversity. This mix of styles helps explains the range of home prices in the area.

Suburban convenience

While it can sometimes feel like a world unto itself, Thorncrest Village provides easy access the rest of the city. Frequent bus service runs along Islington Avenue, connecting residents to the Bloor-Danforth subway line at Islington Station. For commuters, Highway 401 is a just a few minutes away via Bloor Street.

Though there are convenient options for getting around, neighbourhood residents can find almost everything they need without leaving the area. Take Islington Avenue to Thorncrest Plaza shopping centre, where you’ll find a grocery store, bank, cafe, pharmacy, and other amenities. For a more upscale shopping experience, check out Bloor West Village, which is less than a 15-minute drive away.

A strong sense of community

One of the best parts of living in Thorncrest Village is being part of a tight-knit community. There are just over 200 homes in the neighbourhood, and a large proportion of residents belong to the Thorncrest Homes Association. The association provides recreational facilities—including a clubhouse, a swimming pool, and tennis courts—that act as central meeting places in the community.

Does the idea of raising a family in one of Toronto’s most charming and exclusive suburbs appeal to you? If so, you’ll want to place Thorncrest Village near the top of your list of prospective neighbourhoods.
